BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- The Roadrunner softball team is preparing to host Seattle U in Bakersfield's last home games of the 2014 season this weekend.
Seattle U (15-28, 4-5 WAC) and Bakersfield (11-34-1, 1-8 WAC) have played five times in the programs' histories with the most recent games occurring five seasons ago. CSUB holds a 4-1 all-time record over the Redhawks and claimed two out of three games in 2009.
The Redhawks entered the week with a 2-1 WAC series win over Kansas City. Seattle U sandwiched the lone loss with two wins against the Kangaroos. The Redhawks are led by a quartet of strong hitters who are all batting over .350 on the season. The highlight of that group is Bubba Morrow, a junior catcher who leads the team in runs scored (31), home runs (9), and RBI (35). Seattle has a well-rounded pitching staff with three pitchers that have seen at least 10 starts in the circle.
Bakersfield split a doubleheader against Cal State Northridge before enduring a tough weekend in Las Cruces as the 'Runners were swept by WAC leaders New Mexico State. Amy Ricciardi (Sr., Chino Hills, Calif., Ayala HS) highlighted the 'Runner offense last week which scored eight runs in the three-game series but could not keep up with the potent Aggie offense. The senior went 6-14 (.425) on the week while scoring twice and driving in two RBI. Sydney Raeber (So., Hanford, Calif., Hanford HS) added six hits of her own and scored three times for Bakersfield.
The 'Runners will recognize five seniors on Senior Day this weekend. Joining Ricciardi in their final home games are Taylor DeSilva (Sr., Sunnyvale, Calif., Pacific), Kara Frankhouser (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College), Shay Fryer (Sr., San Diego, Calif., University HS), and Karissa Veiga (Sr., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS).
The series will begin with a two p.m. contest on Friday and the 'Runners will close the series against the Redhawks with a doubleheader that starts at one p.m. on Saturday.
