HERMOSA BEACH, Calif.-The Bakersfield sand volleyball team opened the first day of the second USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge with the team tournament at the Strand. The Roadrunners went 1-2 in dual competition.
Playing in Pool B as the sixth overall seed, the Roadrunners began the day by dropping a 5-0 decision to No. 3 Hawai'i. Mariah Alvidrez (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) and Shayna Guitare (Sr., Torrance, Calif., Pierce College) at No. 2 and Danika Youngblood (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah, Western Nebraska CC) and Sydney Haynes (Fr., Vancouver, Wash., Evergreen HS) at No. 4 took their opponents to three sets before losing the match.
The 'Runners dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 2 Pepperdine in the middle session. The Waves won all five matches in straight sets.
Bakersfield defeated Arizona 3-2 to conclude the day. Alvidrez and Gutiare won by straight sets at No. 2 doubles. Hazel Perrins (So., Stavanger, Norway, Louisiana-Monroe) and Haynes won at No. 4. CSUB earned the victory by forfeit at No. 5.
The pairs portion of the tournament begins Sunday at 10 a.m.
