BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- After the majority of the team took the week off, the Bakersfield Track and Field squad will head to the Central Coast for the Cal Poly Invitational from March 28-29.
Men
The 'Runner men are led by junior thrower, Bryan Wilmert (Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS). Wilmert is coming off back-to-back impressive performances in the hammer throw. Two weeks ago at the Cal State LA Invitational, Wilmert's distance of 197-0 earned him the fifth best throw in the nation at that point as well as WAC Field Athlete of the Week honors. Wilmert will be joined in the hammer throw on Friday by teammates Gabe Holland (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska, University of Alaska) and Jon Davies (Fr., Vista, Calif., Monte Vista HS). Holland will be the only athlete competing on both days as he will take on the discus on Saturday as well.
Other 'Runners who will compete on Day 2 include Max Fagan (Jr., Auburn, Calif., College of the Siskiyous) and Richard Maestre (RJr., Bakersfield, Calif., South HS). The pair will race in the 400m hurdles. In the field events, Karnell Grimes (Jr., Rosamond, Calif., Rosamond HS) will take on the javelin while freshman Kyle Wiggins (Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) will pole vault and compete in the long jump.
Bakersfield's speed will be represented in the legs of Justus Mora (Sr., Sparks, Nev., Spanish Springs HS) and Matthew Turkington (RJr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS). The duo will run in the 100m and 200m sprints as well as compete as part of the 4 x 100m relay team.
Women
Alyssa Page (Jr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Montgomery HS) and Marina Emhoff (RFr., Bakersfield, Calif., North HS) will continue to lead the 'Runner women this weekend. The two will race in the 200m and 400m while taking a leg each for both of the Bakersfield relay teams.
Two strong middle distance 'Runners in Megan Thompson (RJr., Fellows, Calif., Taft Union HS) and Ariana Mariscal (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., North HS) will tackle the 800m race on Saturday. Both women have set personal bests in the race this season while Mariscal ran well enough earlier this year to crack the Bakersfield All-Time Top 10 in the event.
Heading to the field, Gabby Giuliano (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) will take on the pole vault, where she has made great progress this season. The Bakersfield native will also compete in the javelin while teammate Audrena Harlan (So., Antioch, Calif., Dozier-Libbey Medical HS) will enter the long and triple jumps.
