BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- The Roadrunner men's and women's track and field squads will head to Fullerton, Calif. on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Ben Brown Invitational.
Women
The women had a good showing in Los Angeles last week in their outdoor season opener. Alyssa Page (Jr., Santa Rosa, Calif., Montgomery HS) and Marina Emhoff (RFr., Bakersfield, Calif., North HS) both sat the Cal State L.A. meet out to rest and recover from the WAC Indoor Championships. The two will compete in the 200m and 400m dashes as well as both relays (4 x 100m and 4x 400m).
Freshman
Ariana Mariscal (Bakersfield, Calif., North HS) enters the weekend with strong performances in each of the last two weeks. The Bakersfield native got on the podium at the WAC Indoor Championships with a third-place finish in the 800m that earned her All-Conference honors. Coming off of that performance as well as a personal best run, Mariscal will compete in the 800m this weekend as well as run with the 4 x 400m relay team.
Meghan Cleare (Fr., Boron, Calif., Boron HS) will be the lone female thrower for the 'Runners again as she is coming off of a solid collegiate outdoor debut. The freshman finished ninth in the hammer throw in Los Angeles. Joining Cleare and the other lady 'Runners this weekend will be Megan Thompson (RJr., Fellows, Calif., Taft Union HS), Jorey Braughton (RJr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS), and Tori Blackmon (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) who will all compete in the 1500m.
Audrena Harlan (So., Antioch, Calif., Dozier-Libbey Medical HS), Gabby Giuliano (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS), and Dominique Alexander (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., South HS) will all be taking to the track for the 'Runners as well in their respective disciplines.
Men
The Roadrunner men posted strong performances last weekend in their outdoor season opener, especially from the team's throwers. Bryan Wilmert (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) highlighted the day for the 'Runners with a second place finish in the hammer throw. His teammate, Gabe Holland (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska, University of Alaska) finished third in the hammer as well as second in the discus. Both will look to continue throwing well when they head to Fullerton.
Joining these two in the field events will be freshmen Kyle Wiggins (Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) and Jon Davies (Vista, Calif., Monte Vista HS). Wiggins will compete in the pole vault and long jump while Davies will join Wilmert and Holland in the hammer throw. Another Bakersfield freshman is DeArris Rockett (Palmdale, Calif., Highland HS) who will follow up a solid finish in the 800m last weekend with another chance at the race.
Junior transfer Max Fagan (Auburn, Calif., College of the Siskiyous) will build on a Top 10 finish in the 400m hurdles while Justus Mora (Sr., Sparks, Nev., Spanish Springs HS) and Matthew Turkington (RJr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) will tackle the 100m and 200m dashes. Karnell Grimes (Jr., Rosamond, Calif., Rosamond HS) is coming off his best season-opening performance in the javelin and will attempt to improve a distance of 166-08.
Bakersfield will start the meet with hammer and javelin on Friday while all other events take place on Saturday. For a complete schedule and the live results, see the links above.
