BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Brooklynn Hinkens (Sr., Lake Tapps, Wash., Auburn-Riverside HS) connected on her first six three-point attempts as Bakersfield defeated Fresno State 80-60 Sunday afternoon in women's basketball action between the two central valley rivals.

Behind Hinkens' hot shooting, the Roadrunners jumped out to a 50-34 halftime lead. CSUB went 18-of-31 from the field (58.1%) and sank 10 of 15 first half three-point attempts (66.7%).

“Brooke's shooting was a key,” said CSU Bakersfield head coach Greg McCall. “She hit four quick three's and became contagious.”  “Her shooting was able to open up the driving lanes for Ty and our post players.”

Hinkens, who is eighth in CSUB Division I history in made three-pointers (109), would lead all scorers with 19 points. Tyonna Outland (R-Sr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) and Dajy Vines (R-Sr., Oxnard, Calif., Santa Clara HS) each scored 18 points.

Raven Fox, who led Fresno State with 31 points at the University of San Diego Friday night, was limited to 10 points in 22 minutes of play. Alex Sheedy led the Bulldogs with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Fresno State outrebounded the 'Runners 45-29. The Roadrunners forced 29 Bulldogs' turnovers which CSUB turned into 38 points. Bakersfield made 14 steals.

“Playing good defense on Fox was key,” McCall said.  

This was the first time in seven attempts that CSU Bakersfield defeated Fresno State in the women's basketball at the Division I level. 

 “Fresno State is our central valley rival,” McCall said. “We go up against them on the recruiting trail, and we recruit a lot of the same players. This is a huge game for us.”

The Roadrunners return to the Icardo Center next Wednesday when CSUB continues a four-game home stand against UC Irvine. The game will be shown on the WAC Digital Network beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at vallitix.com.
