Zamora Scores No. 10 As 'Runners Tie Grand Canyon

Box Score

PHOENIX, Ariz.— Julian Zamora (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Golden Valley HS) became the second Roadrunner player to score at least 10 goals in a season at the Division I level as Bakersfield played Grand Canyon to a 1-1 tie Sunday afternoon in Western Athletic Conference men's soccer action.

Zamora's 10th of the year came in the eighth minute when he converted a Joe Masumiya (R-Sr., Lakewood, Calif., Lakewood HS) pass.  The LA Galaxy's Gyasi Zardes (18, 2011/15, 2012) is the other CSUB player to score at least 10 goals at the Division I level.

“Joe did a great job to set up Julian's goal,” said Bakersfield head coach Richie Grant.

Grand Canyon (4-10-3, 2-5-2 WAC) tied the match in the 85th minute when Alberto Sanchez Garcia converted on a penalty kick. On the ensuing Antelopes' possession, Sanchez Garcia had a shot on goal blocked. The teams went to the first overtime where the lone GCU shot on goal was saved by CSUB keeper Nicolas Clever (So., Cologne, Germany, Gesamtschule Kuerten.  Grand Canyon was called for three of its 12 off sides in the match during the first overtime.

The Roadrunners (9-6-2, 3-4-1 WAC) opened the second overtime with Christian Duarte (Jr., Houston, Texas, Clear Springs HS) a shot that went wide. The Antelopes' Niki Jackson put the 20th and final GCU shot of the day towards Clever and he added to this career high with his ninth save. Grand Canyon had a pair of corner kicks in the 102nd minute, but could not take advantage of the set pieces. Masumiya tallied a shot in the 106th minute which proved to be the final shot of the match for either team.

“Nick (Clever) made some important saves today,” Grant said.  “We will take the point, and we got back on track this weekend.”

Bakersfield sits in the sixth and final WAC Tournament slot with 10 points. Utah Valley is one point ahead of Bakersfield in the standings. The top six eligible teams (UIW and Grand Canyon are ineligible) advance to the WAC Tournament. The final weekend of the season begins Friday when the Roadrunners host Utah Valley at 7 p.m.  Tickets are available at vallitix.com.
