HONOLULU, Hawai'i- After trailing by 17 points midway through the second half the CSUB Roadrunners couldn't convert on enough scoring opportunities or take enough momentum off a 13-0 run over a nine-minute stretch to catch Arkansas-Pine Bluff as the Golden Lions held off the Roadrunners 56-49 in the final game of the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

“Of all three games we played here this was the one we didn't play the best,” said head coach Rod Barnes. “They played a lot of zone pretty much the whole game and we didn't make good adjustments I thought after we got into a ryhthym we were handling it the way we were supposed to handle it but overall it wasn't a good performance.”

It was a slow start for the Roadrunners who in the first half, the turnover limited their offense as Bakersfield trailed 6-0 after their first five possessions following three turnovers. Bakersfield then went on an 11-0 run to take their first lead.

The Roadrunners built the lead to five points again with 10:42 remaining before UAPB went on a 16-4 run over the next ten minutes sparked by JoVaughn Love and his nine points on 4-of-9 shooting. Bakersfield's Aly Ahmed (Jr., Alexandria, Egypt, Midland CC) was limited to just seven minutes of action after two personal fouls early in the contest.

Following the UAPB run, Bakersfield trailed 28-21 at the half.

In the second half the Roadrunners again struggled out of the gate missing their first five field goal attempts while UAPB held Bakersfield to just two points in the first seven minutes of action. Following a replay foul call on Ahmed and a technical on the Bakersfield bench, the Roadrunners trailed by 17 points with 12:47 remaining.

The Roadrunners would play their best basketball of the night for the next eight minutes and 41 seconds as CSUB would go on a 13-0 run sparked by Kevin Mays (Jr., Queens N.Y., Midland CC) who scored 10 points during that stretch en route to his 15 points in the game. Mays was 3-of-9 from the field in the game but an impressive 9-of-11 from the free throw line.

After one Pine Bluff free throw, the Roadrunners trailed by five points with 2:03 remaining, despite two missed shots creating opportunities for the 'Runners, a turnover with 1:38 remaining would set up a JoVaughn Love dunk following an offensive rebound for the Golden Lions. That gave UAPB a seven-point lead with 1:09 to play.

CSUB would convert on one more three-pointer from Javonte Maynor (R-Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Georgia State) who scored a game-high 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 5-of-9 from three-point range, but Pine Bluff made all eight of their free throws in the final 30 seconds to hold off the Roadrunners.

Bakersfield was disrupted all night with foul trouble by leading-scorer Aly Ahmed who played just seven minutes in the first half and 10 minutes in the second half. Ahmed has scored a combined 44 points through the first two games of the tournament. He was limited with eight points and zero rebounds on 2-of-2 shooting from the field.

Despite the foul trouble, Ahmed score a combined 52 points over the three-game tournament while shooting 20-of-34 from the field and earning a Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic All-Tournament team nod.

“We had guys in foul trouble sitting on the bench with us and we did have some guys step up and play pretty well,” Barnes said. “We're just not playing the way we need to be playing right now but we've got to bounce back.

The Roadrunners will continue their season opening-road trip Thursday traveling to San Diego to take on 16^th-ranked San Diego State at 7:30 P.M. That game can be heard on Newstalk 1180 KERN and will also be televised on Fox Sports San Diego.
