Peers Strong In Match Play Loss To UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif.-- The 'Runners traveled south to Canyon Crest Country Club to take on UC Riverside in head-to-head match play Sunday afternoon. Bakersfield lost 5-2 against the Highlanders who were ranked 60th in the nation coming into this weekend.

The Roadrunners put up a good fight, giving UC Riverside trouble in multiple matches in what Women's Head Coach Meghan Thomason described as a successful day on the links: “The team had a really good time playing match play, which is a format we don't typically get to play competitively during the college golf season.”

The highlight of the day was freshman Tori Peers (Grand Island, Neb., Grand Island HS) picking up a win against Brittani Ferraro, UC Riverside's No. 1 golfer and reigning Big West Women's Golfer of the Month. The two battled it out and even needed a 19th hole to decide the match, but Peers triumphed and picked up an impressive win. “I'm incredibly proud of Tori,” said the Nebraska native's coach. “She beat UCR's number one player, making par on the last. She showed a lot of maturity in her decision making and the way she handled her nerves.”

The other Bakersfield winner was Jordanne Barr (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Frontier HS), who took down Yuri Ahn of UCR. “Jordanne played great, winning her match in 15 holes,” said Thomason. “Everyone on the team fought hard. We had a few close matches that came down to the final holes. I'm really proud of the team's effort today.”

The Roadrunners have concluded their fall schedule with Sunday's match play. Bakersfield will take the next two months off to prepare for the upcoming spring season. The 'Runners will resume play Feb. 9-10 with the CSUN Matador Invitational in Northridge.
