PROVO, Utah - Facing the first-pace team in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, the CSU Bakersfield softball team fell in both games of its doubleheader against BYU on Friday, losing Game 1, 4-1, and Game 2, 13-6.
The Roadrunners (14-31, 9-13 PCSC) and Cougars (25-22, 14-4 PCSC) will play in another doubleheader on Saturday to finish the series, with games slated to start at 1 p.m. MDT and 3 p.m. MDT. Both games will be broadcast nationally on BYUtv.
On Friday, Game 1 started with a pitcher's duel, with CSUB sophomore Kelsie Monroe (Los Banos, Calif., Delta College) before BYU broke open the scoreless game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Junior left fielder Karissa Veiga (Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) went 2-for-3 in the game and drove in CSUB's only run in the top of the fifth, but the 'Runners couldn't catch up to BYU, who only outhit the 'Runners 6-5 in the contest, but managed to score more runs.
In Game 2, the Cougars jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning. However, the 'Runners bounced back with four runs in the top of the second to cut the lead to 6-4. BYU pinned up two more runs in the second and third to make it 10-4, and despite two more CSUB runs in the top of the fourth, the 'Runners never could complete the comeback.
Junior shortstop Shay Fryer went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored, Veiga added a hit an a run and freshman right fielder Sydney Raeber (Hanford, Calif., Hanford HS) went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Saturday's doubleheader will feature CSUB's final PCSC contests of the season.
