BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Junior shortstop Shay Fryer (San Diego, Calif., University HS) hit a home run, but it wasn't enough for the CSU Bakersfield softball team as the Roadrunners lost to No. 15 Hawai'i 8-1 in nonconference play on Tuesday at Roadrunner Softball Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine (34-8) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added two runs in the fourth, three runs in the sixth and one more run in the seventh on their way to the win. They were led by leadoff hitter Kelly Majam, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Kayla Wartner, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and hit a home run.
CSUB (13-26) got six hits in the contest, with Fryer's solo blast, her second of the season, coming in the sixth inning. Junior first baseman Amy Ricciardi (Chino Hills, Calif., Ayala HS) reached base twice by singling and getting hit by a pitch.
Mills took the loss after giving up the first two runs in a one-inning appearance. Sophomore Kelsie Monroe (Los Banos, Calif., Delta College) gave up two runs on three hits in 2.1 innings of work with three strikeouts, junior Taylor DeSilva (Sunnyvale, Calif., University of the Pacific) tossed 1.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits, and freshman Sydney Raeber (Hanford, Calif., Hanford HS) gave up two runs on four hits with one strikeout.
Kaia Parnaby got the win for Hawai'I, improving to 31-4 on the season after giving up one run on five hits with nine strikeouts in six innings.
The Roadrunners will return to Pacific Coast Softball Conference play this weekend when they host Saint Mary's in their final home stand of the year. The 'Runners and Gaels both enter the weekend tied for fourth place in the PCSC standings with 8-8 conference records. There will be doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday with action beginning at noon both days.
