SAN ANTONIO, Texas- The CSUB Roadrunners used a 10-2 run to break open a tie game midway through the second half and hit all 13 free throws in the final minutes to sweep the season series against UT San Antonio 61-52 Tuesday night at the Convocation Center in San Antonio.
CSUB (10-15) never trailed in the game, building a nine-point first-half lead behind 40% shooting from the field and 36% from three-point range. The Roadrunners also held San Antonio to 28% in the first half and 0-6 from three-point range. UTSA (5-19) would open the second half on a 11-2 run to tie the game at 30 with 14:15 remaining. CSUB would take the lead for good following an Adam Young (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev., Barton CC) three-pointer and a technical foul on the UTSA bench during the ensuing possession. The 'Runners used that to go on a 10-2 run, taking control for good and building a lead as big as 13 in the final minute following made free throws.
"Our guys really came out with a lot of energy and we preached that all week about coming out with the same energy that we did at home and that made a big difference for us," said assistant coach Jeff Conarroe.
Stephon Carter (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Garces) led the 'Runners with 16 points on 5-10 shooting and 6-8 from the free-throw line. Young scored a season-high 14 points for CSUB on 4-6 from the field and 2-4 from three-point range including the shot that put the Roadrunners up for good with 14 minutes left to play. Young also added six rebounds three assists and two blocks on the night. Tyrone White (Sr., Portland, Ore., North Idaho CC) rounded out CSUB's top scorers with 12 points on 3-8 shooting.
"I really thought our seniors and senior leadership stepped up tonight, great leadership on and off the court verbally and by action too and they really played well," said Conarroe.
CSUB won for the second time this season outside the state of California sweeping the season series with UTPA. Bakersfield had won the previous match up 85-52 on Dec. 1 at Rabobank Arena.
The 'Runners shot a season-best 90.5% from the free-throw line going a combined 19-21 on the night from the stripe while shooting 41% from the field and 30% from three-point range. CSUB also outrebounded UTSA 31-27.
CSUB will continue their road trip in the Lone Star State Thursday traveling to future WAC foe UT Pan American in Edinburg, Texas., Tipoff is scheduled for 7 P.M. (CST).
