Cal Poly Defeats Bakersfield

Box Score

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Cal Poly (5-4) defeated Bakersfield (2-5) 63-54 in women's basketball action Saturday night.

Trailing 29-21 with 3:54 to play in the first half, Bakersfield scored the final seven points of the opening frame to make it 29-28 heading into the break. With Cal Poly leading 45-42 at the second media timeout of the second half, both teams' shooting went cold midway through the second half.

The Mustangs did not make a basket for 4:40. However, the Mustangs maintained the lead, keeping the Roadrunners off the board entirely for nearly seven minutes, pushing their lead to eight, 55-47 into the final media timeout of the second half.

Shaquita Smith's (Jr., Buffalo, N.Y., ASA College) three-pointer out of the final media timeout broke the draught and made it a five-point game. The Mustangs' Molly Schlemer, the tallest player on the floor at 6-4, scored the next six points for Cal Poly to give the Mustangs a 60-54 lead. A CSUB turnover led to a 'Runner flagrant foul with 33.8 seconds to go. Jonae Ervin connected on 1-of-2 before Cal Poly took the ball out. The Mustangs were fouled again as Ariana Elegado made both for the final 63-54 margin with 31 seconds to go.

All nine 'Runner players who hit the floor scored, led by Brooklynn Hinkens (Jr., Lake Tapps, Wash., Auburn-Riverside HS) led CSUB with 11 points. Batabe Zempare (So., Accra, Ghana, Scottsdale Chapparal HS) grabbed a game high 14 rebounds.

The 'Runners leading scorer Tyonna Outland (R-Jr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) was held to just five points. Outland did not take her first shot attempt until the 6:21 mark of the first half when she connected on a three-point field goal. Outland did haul in nine rebounds and made two steals.

Cal Poly was led by Elegado led the Mustangs with 14 points. Schlemer had 10 points. Both teams shot under 40-percent. The Roadrunners came in at 32.2% (19-of-59) while the Mustangs went 34.4% (22-of-64) from the floor.

"We had a great defensive effort tonight," said Bakersfield head coach Greg McCall. "We had our opportunities. Cal Poly gave us the shots we wanted to get and we excecuted the plays we wanted, but just didn't put the ball in the basket again."

The Roadrunners travel to the University of San Francisco Wednesday night. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
