Kansas City Hands Bakersfield A 1-0 Loss

Box Score

KANSAS CITY, Mo.--Kansas City handed Bakersfield a 1-0 loss in Western Athletic Conference women's soccer play Friday afternoon. Despite the loss, the Roadrunners remain alive in the WAC Tournament race.

The Kangaroos (10-8-1, 7-4 WAC) got the gamewinner at 24:57 of the first half when Emily Herndon scored off a Taylor Bare assist. The 'Runners outshot the 'Roos 10-9 and had a corner kick with just under three to play, but Bakersfield could not convert the set piece for the tiebreaker.

Entering Sunday's regular season finale at New Mexico State, the Roadrunners (4-13-1, 3-7-1 WAC) trail fourth place Idaho by two points. The Vandals (4-14, 4-7 WAC) lost 3-0 Friday to league Seattle U (14-2-2, 11-0 WAC). Idaho hosts the Redhawks Sunday in a rematch.

Utah Valley (9-8-1, 7-3-1 WAC) defeated the Aggies (4-13-2, 1-9-1 WAC) 2-1 in overtime Friday to clinch the second seed in the WAC Tournament. If Bakersfield and Idaho conclude the regular season in a tie for fourth, the Roadrunners will advance to the league meet via the head-to-head tiebreaker as the 'Runners defeated the Vandals both times they met this season.

"We are fortunate to still have so much to play for," said Bakersfield head coach Melissa Phillips. "We need to move past this one quickly and on to Sunday."

The action at NM State gets underway at 1 p.m. (MST).
