CSUB's Veiga Honored By College Sports Madness

CSUB's sophomore softball player Karissa Veiga (Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) has been named to the first team of the College Sports Madness Pacific Coast Softball All-Conference. The star outfielder, who led the team with a .378 batting average, was the only Roadrunner named to the squad.

It is the second postseason award for Veiga, who was also the only CSUB player to be selected to the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Coastal Division First Team.

"First, I would like to congratulate Karissa. It is always wonderful to get aknowledgment from outside of the PCSC and she is very deserving," said CSUB head softball coach Crissy Buck. "I think if Karissa keeps this up, this is a step in the right direction to awards like All-American and other national honors, which I think she deserves and is capable of.”

Veiga's numbers caught the college sports internet site's eye and ranked her among team leaders in nearly every category, despite the fast that she battled a foot injury in the second half of the season. She led the team in base on balls (15) and on-base percentage (.449), tied for first in runs scored (26), doubles (6), triples (2), was second in stolen bases (6) and slugging percentage (.446) and also added 18 RBIs.

In PCSC play, Veiga was just as impressive. She finished second on the PCSC leaderboard with a .456 batting average in conference play, was sixth in on-base percentage (.516) and tied for eight in hits with 26. Throughout the season, Veiga provided a solid glove in left field before the injury forced her into the designated player slot in the lineup.
