SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Roadrunner junior Matt Hammons (Bakersfield, Calif., Highland HS) finished in a three-way tie for 13th place with a 3-over 219 to pace the CSU Bakersfield men's golf team at the OGIO UC Santa Barbara Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday.
Hammons shot rounds of 73 and 72 on Monday and then finished off the 54-hole tournament, which was held at Sandpiper Golf Course, with a 74 on Tuesday.
As a team, the Roadrunners moved up from 11th place to 10th on the final day of the two-day tournament. After combining for rounds of 303 and 301 on Monday, CUSB carded a 299 on Tuesday to finish at 903.
CSUB sophomore Chase Goodvin (Bakersfield, Calif., Frontier HS) and senior Jason Errecart (Kerman, Calif., Kerman HS) finished in a tie for 47th place with 14-over 230s. Goodvin carded rounds of 75 and 76 on Monday before posting a 79 on Tuesday. Errecart shot a 76 and a 75 on Monday before also finishing with a 79. Junior Daniel Richardson finished one stroke behind them at 231, which was good enough to tie for 51st. Richardson improved in each round, shooting a 79 and 78 on Monday before hitting a 74 on Tuesday.
The 'Runners were shorthanded as they had to finish the tournament with only four golfers after junior Patrick Bell (Manchester, England, Reedley College) was injuried in the second round on Monday and was forced to withdraw.
Long Beach State captured the team title with a three-round total of 854 (282-287-285). Long Beach State's Xander Schauffele won the individual crown with an 8-under 208 (71-69-68).
CSUB will now take a three-week break from competition before returning to action to tee off in the UC Irvine Invitational at Shady Canyon Golf Course on April 22-23. The tournament will be the final competition of the regular season as CSUB will then head to Stonnington, Conn. to play in its first-ever American Sky Conference Championships April 30 through May 2.
