Hot Shooting Cal Poly Defeats CSUB 95-78

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Cal Poly (10-12) shot almost 65 percent from the field as the Mustangs defeated CSU Bakersfield (4-20) 95-78 in women's basketball action Wednesday night.

Cal Poly made 18-of-28 field goals attempts in the first half (64.3%) to take a 44-24 lead into halftime. The Mustangs pushed the lead to 31, 63-32, with 14:30 remaining. The Roadrunners rallied, going on a 24-6 run to cut the Mustangs' advantage to 13 at the 9:13 mark. Cal Poly responded with a 17-4 spurt to push the lead to 26 and regain the momentum for the eventual victory.

The Mustangs' Kristina Santiago scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to pace Cal Poly. She made 12-of-19 field goals attempts in 27 minutes. Kayla Griffin recorded 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Ashlee Burns had 14 while Joane Ervin scored 10 points and charted nine assists. Cal Poly ended the night shooting 38-of-59 from the floor (64.4%).

Five of the seven CSUB players who dressed scored in double figures, led by Ciarra Ford (Jr., Long Beach, Calif., Mt. Sac College) who tied her career high with 19 points. Lauren Carter (R-Jr., Moorpark, Calif., Moorpark HS) had 17 points and five rebounds. Brooklynn Hinkens (Fr., Lake Tapps, Wash., Auburn-Riverside HS) recorded a career high 16 points. Amber Williams (Jr., Fontana, Calif., Eitwanda HS) tallied 11 points while Kristine Herman (R-Sr., San Ramon, Calif., Florida Gulf Coast) added 10.

"We started off very slow and sluggish," said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. "We had a difficult time containing (Kristina) Santiago. Our main goal was to try and get her in foul trouble, but her teammates stepped up when she went to the bench. We did a good job of coming out strong in the second half and got the lead down to 13, but we weren't able to take advantage of our opportunities down the stretch."

CSUB is at UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
