BAKERSFIELD, Calif.,-Stephon Carter (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Garces HS) was honored in front of a group of community members and fellow outstanding athletes Monday afternoon by the Bakersfield Jockey Club, an award presented by his head coach Rod Barnes.
Carter is the first member of the CSUB men's basketball team to be honored by the local sports group this season. He's leading the 'Runners with 11.4 points per game while shooting 43% from the field. His most recent 13-point effort against Cal Poly was enough to move the junior into a tie for 10th place on CSUB's All-Time scoring list with Wayne McDaniel (1980-82). He needs just seven points at Texas Pan-American this Wednesday to move past Dwuan Rice for 9th on the list.
Carter has been honored previously by the Jockey Club as a prep athlete at Garces Memorial High School. Members of the Garces administration were on hand.
The Jockey Club has been honoring outstanding Kern County athletes since the 1960's and will honor over 300 high school and college student athletes this school year.
