ST. GEORGE, Utah - The CSU Bakersfield men's golf team
wrapped up its first tournament of the 2012 spring season on Tuesday and
sophomore Chase Goodvin (So., Bakersfield,
Calif., Frontier HS) led the way for the Roadrunners by finishing in a tie for
36th place with a two-round total of 151 at the Eighth Annual Pat
Hicks Thunderbird Invitational at Sunbrook Golf Club.
After shooting a 73 on
Monday and being tied for 15th place, Goodvin carded a 78 on
Tuesday. As a team, the Roadrunner shot a 309 on Tuesday and, combined with
their 308 on Monday, finished with a 617 to wind up in a tie for 13th
place in the team standings with Seattle.
CSUB's Matt Hammons (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Highland HS),
Patrick Bell (Jr., Manchester, England, Reedley College) and Jason Errecart
(Sr., Kerman, Calif., Kerman HS) all carded two-day totals of 156 strokes to
finish in a tie for 66th place. Dylan Lym (Evanston, Wyo., Evanston
HS) finished just behind them with a 157 that put him in a tie for 77th
place.
"We played about the same as we did on Monday which was
pretty scraggly," said CSUB head coach Dave Barber. "We are still very rusty
from the layoff. We are looking forward to more tournaments so we can get
sharper. Hopefully we can start that in Fullerton."
Cal State Fullerton took the team title by shooting a 575,
just two shots ahead of host Southern Utah. Cal State Northridge's Chris Russo
turned in two rounds of 70 for a 140 to finish atop the individual standings.
The Thunderbird Invite marked the first action on the golf
course for the 'Runners since October. It is the first of six tournaments this
spring for CSUB. Up next, CSUB will play in the Cal State Fullerton
Invitational at Industry Hills Golf Course in Industry Hills, Calif., Sunday
through Tuesday. The CSUB women's golf squad will also be in action in the
tournament.
