Cal Poly Edges CSUB 75-71

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.--For the second day in a row, CSU Bakersfield battled back from double digits in the second half, but could get over the final hurdle as Cal Poly defeated Bakersfield 75-71 in the final game of the Cal Poly Holiday Tournament Sunday afternoon.

The Mustangs controlled most of the game, limitting the Roadrunners to 36-percent shooting. Cal Poly led by as much as 18 in the second half, but CSUB cut the advantage down to eight, 65-57, with 5:29 to go before the Mustangs scored the next seven points to put the lead back into double figures.

With Cal Poly leading 73-62 with 90 seconds remaining, CSUB would score the next five points to whittle it down to five. The Roadrunners fouled Caroline Reeves with 24 seconds to go. Reeves missed both leading to a Tyonna Outland (R-So., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) layup at the 15-second mark for a 72-69 CP lead.

CSUB fouled Jonae Ervin immediately. Ervin sank 1-of-2 attemps to make it a two-possession game. The Mustangs called timeout. Amber Williams (Sr., Fontana, Calif., Etiwanda HS) made a layup with eight seconds to make it 73-71. CSUB fouled Ervin again two seconds later, she converted both free throws for the final 75-71.

Williams led the Roadrunners with 21 points. Outland scored 12. Ervin scored 13 points as four Cal Poly players scored in double figures.

The Roadrunners travel to Oregon State Nov. 29 for a 12 p.m. tip.
