Arizona Defeats CSUB 71-50

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Arizona used a 12-1 run to start the second half as the Wildcats defeated CSU Bakersfield 71-50 in the 2012-13 season opener for both schools Friday night.

Arizona held the Roadrunners to 27.3% shooting for the game and nine CSUB field goals in each half. The Wildcats outrebounded CSU Bakersfield 62-41. Both teams were sloppy with the ball, combining for 51 turnovers (26 for CSUB, 25 for Arizona).

The Wildcats were led by Davellyn Whyte who scored a game high 16 points. Cheshi Poston recorded a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. CSUB was led by Tyonna Outland (R-So., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) who made her return from ACL surgery on her left knee by scoring a team high 13 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Janae Coffee (R-So., Fresno, Calif., Long Beach State) scored 12 points, nabbed nine rebounds, and blocked two shots.

"We had a lot of missed layups and free throws," said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. "In the game of women's basketball, you have to make you layups and your freethrows and really create turnovers. We shot 60 percent from the free-throw line, 27 percent from the field. We had a really, really poor shooting night and then we had 26 turnovers. They had 25 so that was good, but our 26 is too many."

The Roadrunners travel to Northern Arizona Monday night for a 5:35 p.m. (PST) start.
