NIPOMO, Calif.— In the first tournament of
the season for the CSU Bakersfield women's golf team, Malea
Miller (Jr. Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield College) finished in a tie for
eighth place with a 75-78-74—227 at the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational
at the Monarch Dunes Golf Course on Tuesday. Patrick
Bell (Sr. Manchester, England, Reedley College) led the way for the CSUB
men's golf team, tying for 18th place with a 73-72-73—218 at the
same tournament.
Miller was tied for fifth after Monday's
first round, and after splitting the second round between Monday and Tuesday
because of darkness, along with Tuesday's final, third round, fell to a tie for
eighth. Also finishing in the top 20 for the CSUB women were Lauren Holbrook
(So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS), who tied for 15th with a 79-79-77—235,
and Jordanne Barr (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Frontier HS), who tied for 17th
with a 85-78-73—236.
"They started slow due to the weather
conditions, but finished strong," said CSUB head women's coach Tony Bernardin. "They worked well together as a team in tournament
preparation."
Bell was the only Roadrunner to finish in
the top 20 in the men's tournament. He shot rounds of 73-72-73 for a 218 to tie
for 18th. That gives Bell two top-20 individual finishes in as many
chances this season. Daniel Richardson (Surrey, England, Reedley College)
turned in the next lowest score for CSUB with a 75-77-76—228 to tie for 40th.
“We played a little bit better today, but we
still struggled out there,” said CSUB head coach Dave Barber. “We have a lot of
work to do on chipping and putting and that's what we will be working on until
the next tournament.”
Overall, the CSUB women finished in fifth
place out of seven teams with a 321-323-311—955, while the 'Runner men's squad
placed ninth out of 10 teams with a 303-303-298—904. Cal Poly won both the men's
and women's titles with scores of 847 and 901 respectively.
The CSUB men's golf team will be back in
action Oct. 22-23 at the Cal State Northridge Cullum Invitational in Semi
Valley, Calif., while the Roadrunner women's squad will tee off again at the
Santa Clara Colby Invitational Oct. 22-23 in San Jose Cailf.
