CSU Bakersfield head golf coach Dave Barber hired Tony
Bernardin as an assistant for the Roadrunner golf program in November of 2011.
Bernardin, a CSUB alumnus, will be in charge of the women's
golf program, which took the 2011 fall season off, but will be back in action
in the spring of 2012.
While this will be the first collegiate coaching position
for Bernadrin, he has vast high school and youth golf coaching experience
including being the girls golf coach at Frontier High School the former boys
golf coach at Highland High School in Bakersfield. He also serves as the
president of the Kern Young Women's Golf Association.
"His strength is that he has a good knowledge of all of the
high school and women golfers in Southern California. He knows a lot more about
that than me," said CSU head golf coach Dave Barber. "We are looking to take
the women's golf team to a very competitive level and this is definitely a step
in the right direction."
A Bakersfield product and Garces High School graduate,
Bernardin graduated from CSUB in 1976 with a degree in physical education. He
attended Bakersfield College and Cal Poly prior to his time as a Roadrunner.
Bernardin is a math teacher at Frontier High School. He
lives in Bakersfield with his wife, Terrie and the couple has two daughters and
three granddaughters.
