BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Rachel McCall (Sr., Calgary, Alberta, National Sport School) recorded the third fastest 400-yard individual medley time in CSU Bakersfield women's swimming history and Katrina Thomas (R-Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Golden Valley HS) posted two personal-best times to lead the Roadrunners in a 119-87 to San Jose State at the Hillman Aquatic Center on Friday.
McCall clocked a time of 4 minutes, 33.77 seconds in the 400 IM for a second-place finish. She also won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:25.40. Thomas placed second in the 500 freestyle with a personal-best mark of 5:31.84 and recorded her fastest time ever in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:04.70.
CSUB head coach Chris Hansen was very happy with the performance from CSUB, who has a much smaller roster than San Jose State, and credited hard work during winter break to the Roadrunners' success.
"They have been training really, really hard during this six-week training camp, harder than they have ever trained before. They have kept it up and done extremely well and now we are swimming best times," Hansen said. "For someone like Katrina, who is a senior, to be posting best times after this training, makes me psyched that our women's team is becoming a really team. We are not going to compete against San Jose State yet, but we will in a year or two."
CSUB's Isabell Nystrom (Sr., Stockholm, Sweden, Limestone College) placed first in the 500 freestyle (5:07.23) and the 'Runners' 400 freestyle relay team of Nystrom, Sara Brady (Sr., Techachapi, Calif., Bakersfield College), Kristen Koehler (Jr., Yucaipa, Calif., Riverside CC) and Thomas finished in first place with a time of 3:50.10. CSUB's lone diver Jordan Reed (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) won the 1-meter competition with 230.70 points and took first in the 3-meter event 184.43 points.
Thomas said the CSUB squad is now headed in the right direction with four meets remaining in the regular season before the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swimming Championships set for Feb. 15-18 in Long Beach, Calif.
"It was exciting today. I am excited to see how fast I go at conference championships compared to last year," said Thomas, adding that the new training program is effective because it is targeting areas each individual swimmer needs.
The meet hosted the return of CSU Bakersfield graduate Sage Hopkins, who is the head coach for the Spartans.
Hansen said he is also pleased with the support the women got from the men, who swam an exhibition meet on Friday, and how much the two teams are gelling.
The 'Runners will return to action on Jan. 14 when they hit the road to take on Fresno State and Cal State East Bay in Fresno. The tri-meet will begin at noon.
