BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Senior Isabell Nystrom (Stockholm,
Sweden, Limestone College) swam to a first-place finish in the 500-yard
freestyle and recorded a personal-best time in a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard
freestyle to lead the CSU Bakersfield women's swimming and diving team in a
156-104 loss to San Jose State at the Hillman Aquatics Center on Friday.
Nystrom posted a time of 5 minutes, 18.07 seconds to win the
500 free and clocked her fastest time ever in the 1,000 free with a 10:30.89.
The Roadrunners won five out of 16 events against the Spartans and many of CSUB's
swimmers put up their best times of the season.
"I know I sound like a broken record, but every meet they
impress me more and I am excited for the future," said CSUB head swimming coach Chris Hansen
Louise Westergren (Jr., Malmo, Sweden, Pro Civitas HS) took
first place for CSUB in the 50 butterfly with a time of 26.88 and also recorded
her fastest time of the season in the 100 freestyle with a 54.07 that was good
enough for third place.
"Louise has turned out to be the swimmer that I knew she
could always have been," Hansen said. "She gives 100 percent every practice and it is starting to show at the
meets."
Madie Goodvin (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Frontier HS) placed
first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:20.50, the CSUB 200
freestyle relay squad of Rachel McCall (Sr., Calgary, Alberta, National Sport
School), Nystrom, Chelsea Ankeny (Sr., Ontario, Calif., Riverside CC) and Sara Brady (Sr., Tehachapi, Calif., Bakersfield College) posted a winning time of
1:42.57 and CSUB's Jordan Reed (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) won the
three-meter diving competition with a score of 227.40.
McCall continued her impressive season by posting her
fastest marks of the year in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.20, second place) and
the 50 free (24.02, second place). Brady also posted a personal-best time of
55.90 to take sixth place in the 100 freestyle.
"What is great about Sara Brady is that she has emerged as
a fantastic leader for the women's team and I think that is part of the reason
she is swimming faster than she has ever swam before," Hansen said.
The Roadrunners won't have much time to rest as they will be
back in the water to host UC Davis on Saturday at 1 p.m.
