CSUB Breaks Losing Streak With 72-66 Win Over UCR

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-Kristine Herman (R-Sr., San Ramon, Calif., Florida Gulf Coast) scored 31 points including a three-pointer with 1:31 remaining to lift CSU Bakersfield past UC Riverside 72-66 in women's basketball action Wednesday night in the Icardo Center.

The Highlanders led by seven with just over six minutes to play before the Roadrunners rallied to take the lead on Herman's three. The Roadrunners expanded the lead to 67-63 on a Lauren Carter (R-Jr., Moorpark, Calif., Moorpark HS) basket, but UCR's TreShont Cunningham banked in a three-point field to cut it to 67-66 with 33 seconds to go. The Highlanders fouled Herman who made a pair of attempts for a three-point CSUB advantage. Brittany Palmer missed a three-pointer which would have tied the game with 24 seconds to go. CSUB made 3-of-4 free throw attempts in the final 19 seconds for the final 72-66 margin.

Herman was 10-of-20 from the field, 5-of-10 from three-point range. The 5-11 kinesiology major was one point off of her career high (32 vs. Miami, Ohio, 12/11/10). She also grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists, and made three steals as she played all 40 minutes for the second consecutive game. Carter scored 13 points and had eight rebounds while Madison McKenney (So., San Juan Capistrano, Calif., Santa Margarita Catholic HS) had 10 points, a career high seven rebounds, and five assists.

UC Riverside was paced by Natasha Hadley who had a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds. Nottingham scored 15 points while Jamila Williams also posted a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds. UCR outrebounded CSUB 56-37, but turned the ball over 21 times, leading to 23 Roadrunner points.

“Our team played really well down the stretch,” said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. “We have been harping on the kids to take care of the ball, execute, and play defense. Late in the second half, all of those things came together as we made some adjustments including a zone which we were able to do. We came up with some big stops at the end. Herman was on fire tonight. She kept us in the game and her three put us for good late in the game.”

CSUB is off until Jan. 28 when the Roadrunners travel to Cal State Northridge for a 4 p.m. game.
