FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.
- Sprinter Michael Davis (R-Sr., Pacoima, Calif., Fresno City College)
started off the 2012 indoor track and field season on a good note for CSU
Bakersfield at the Lumberjack Invitational on Saturday, setting a personal-best
time of 6.79 seconds to place sixth in the 60-meter dash.
Davis also placed ninth in
the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.27 at the meet, which was hosted by
Northern Arizona University and was the first action of the season for the
Roadrunners' men's and women's squads. Team scores were not kept at the meet,
which featured athletes from several schools including Arizona State, Arizona,
New Mexico, Grand Canyon and Southern Utah.
"The meet went
OK," said CSUB head track and field coach Alan Collatz. "We had most of our
sprinters run longer distances to get into shape. The bright spot was Michael
Davis getting a PR in 60. We'll have better performances next time we come back
as we train more consistently now that winter break is over."
Thrower Collin Ellis (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) turned in a solid performance
for the 'Runners, placing in the top 10 in two events. Ellis placed fifth in
the weight throw with a mark of 52 feet, 4 inches and took ninth in the shot
put with a throw of 45-10.75.
Leading the
way for the CSUB women's squad was the 'Runner 4X400 relay team of Princess Watts (Jr., Apple Valley, Calif., Granite Hills HS), Antionette Garrett (Fr.,
Las Vegas, Nev., Western HS), freshman Taevionna Wilson and Alyssa Page (Fr.,
Santa Rosa, Calif., Montgomery HS), which placed 10th with a time of
4:07.63. Melisa Cruz (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., West HS) led the CSUB distance
runners, placing 11th in the 1-mile run (5:55.82) and 12th
in the 800 (2:41.48).
The meet is the first of
four indoor competitions for the 'Runners. Up next, CSUB will stay closer to
home, but hit the road to compete in the Run For The Dream meet on Jan. 20.
