ALBUQUERQUE, N.M-The University of New Mexico (1-0-1) handed CSU Bakersfield a 4-0 defeat in the 2011 season opener for the Roadrunners Sunday afternoon.
"This is not an ideal start to our season and does not justify the caliber of play this team is capabale of," said CSU Bakersfield Head Coach Melissa Phillips.
Jennifer Williams and Rachel Montoya scored goals 4:11 apart in the opening 10 minutes of the first half to give the Lobos the early advantage. Amanda Collins and Briana Martinez scored in the second half for the Lobos. CSUB played the final 70+ minutes a player down when Sam Peña (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) was issued a red card.
CSUB goalie Kym Gause (Sr., Manteca, Calif., Modesto JC) made six saves as New Mexico outshot CSUB 18-5.
"New Mexico is an experience team that was able to expose us with their pace and took advantage of poor defensive execution," Phillips said. "We now have a week to refocus, address some issues within our play and prepare for our home opener on Friday night."
Friday night's match gets underway at 7 p.m.
