CSUB Names Chris Hansen Director Of Swimming

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.---CSU Bakersfield Athletic Director Jeff Konya has announced that Chris Hansen has been named the Director of Swimming at CSUB. Hansen will oversee both the men's and women's swimming programs for the Roadrunners.

"The search committee comprised of members of the community, student-athletes from both swim teams, athletic department senior staff, and other athletic department personnel unanimously selected Chris for this new position," Konya commented. "In fact the committee only forwarded his name for me to consider for the position.  This is a testament to Chris' success with our men's team and we hope to have our women's program reach that same level of success as we move forward. This is something we needed to due in order to operate more efficiently while still maintaining a quality product in the pool."

"I am excited for the challenge for overseeing both of our programs," Hansen said. "I look forward to helping our women program achieve the same success as we have had with our men's program over the last three years."

Hansen just completed his third year as Head Men's Swimming Coach at CSUB. In 2011, the Roadrunners won the MPSF Men's Swimming Championship, the first for CSUB since the school made the transition to NCAA Division I. The Roadrunners swept MPSF individual honors (Jake Priest-MPSF Men's Swimming Athlete of the Year/Evan Vizcarra-MPSF Men's Swimming Freshman of the Year) while Hansen was named MPSF Men's Swimming Coach of the Year. The Roadrunners reset three school records and posted 17 NCAA 'B' cut times.

A veteran of coaching at the NCAA Division I level, Hansen has produced Olympians, USA National Team members, Olympic Trials qualifiers, USA Swimming Association national qualifiers and NCAA Championship qualifiers. Hansen was the head assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs at North Carolina from 2003-06, where his main responsibilities were recruiting, daily training programs and various administrative duties.

Prior to his stint with the Tar Heels, Hansen was the head men's and women's assistant coach at UNLV, where he helped develop 10 NCAA qualifiers and eight All-Americans. Hansen's first collegiate coaching job was at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., where he served as the head assistant coach to both the men's and women's programs. In 1994, he was named the Colonial Athletic Association Women's Swim Team Coach of the Year.

After brief stints at UNC and Villanova, Hansen was named the men's and women's head coach at Virginia Tech. He compiled a 36-16 record in two seasons and, in 1997-98, recorded the first single season double-digit win totals in the history of the programs (10-3 for the men and 12-1 for the women). Hansen earned his second conference coach of the year award following that standout season, this time by the Atlantic 10. His overall dual record is 49-27 as a collegiate head coach.
