CSUB Defeats Chicago State 93-92 To Advance To WBI Finals

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Amber Williams (So., Fontana, Calif., Etiwanda HS) hit a pair of free throws with 59 seconds remaining in overtime to give CSUB (22-11) a 93-92 victory over Chicago State (24-10) in the semifinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI).

The Roadrunners led by 13 with 17:27 remaining in the second half before the Cougars rallied, tying the game for the ninth time when Elana Wroten made 1-of-2 free throws with 1:51 remaining in the second half.  Chicago State took an 83-81 advantage seven seconds lateron a Courtney Waldon steal and layup. Tyonna Outland (Fr., Compton, Calif. (Lynwood HS) tied the game when she connected on a layup with 88 seconds to go.

Waldon put the Cougars back into the lead with a three-pointer at the 1:11 mark.  Williams sent the game into overtime when connected on a three with 54 ticks on the clock.  In overtime, Chicago State's Natalie Marlowe connected on a pair of free throws 1:11 into the extra frame. Tressa Beckel gave the Cougars a four-point advantage with just under three to play on a putback of a Waldon miss.

Britney McGee (Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Univ. of Albany) got the Roadrunners to back within one on her fourth three-pointer of the night with 2:33 to play. A Williams layup a short time later gave the 'Runners a 91-90 lead.  Beckel's layup with 74 seconds remaining put Chicago State ahead for the final time. On the ensuing possession, Williams drove the lane and was fouled gby Jazzmyn Harvey. Her third and fourth free throws of the night proved to be the gamewinner.

Waldon was called for an offensive foul on the next Chicago State possession, but CSUB turned the ball over almost immediately, giving the Cougars a final offensive chance. With 25 seconds to go, Waldon missed a three-pointer but Beckel got the offensive board, she passed out to Waldon who took a three-point field goal attempt with seven seconds to go. Waldon missed with Kristine Herman (Jr., San Ramon, Calif., Florida Gulf Coast) getting the defensive rebound. She was fouled with two seconds to go. Herman, an 85.7% free throw shooter, missed the front end of her two-shot opportunity. The 5-11 guard missed the second attempt on purpose as time ran out.

Outland led the Roadrunners with 21 points. McGee scored 20 points (8-of-8 from the free throw line). Williams had 19 points and six assists. Herman scored 18 points. Beckel led all scorers with 33 points (14-of-21 from the field). Waldon posted 22 points while Natalie Marlowe had 17.

CSUB awaits the winner of Thursday's semifinal between UAB and Manhattan College in Riverdale, N.Y. If UAB wins, the Blazers will host the WBI finals Mar. 27. If Manhattan wins, the Jaspers travel to Bakersfield for Sunday's final.
