TEMPE, Ariz. - The CSUB softball team lost a pair of games Thursday as it opened its first season of active NCAA Division I membership on
day one of the Arizona State Kajikawa Classic.
The
Roadrunners dropped a heart-breaker in their first game as North Texas scored
seven unanswered runs, including four in the top of the 11th, to
take an 8-4 decision. In the nightcap, No. 9 Oklahoma proved every bit the national
title contender with an 11-2 win.
CSUB
got RBI singles in the opener from Ryane
Petersen (Fresno/Fresno State), freshman Jazmine Lee (Garden Grove/Los Alamitos HS) and Kasie Muro (Tehachapi/Santa Barbara CC) to jump to a 4-1 lead, but
North Texas scored three in the fourth to tie the game.
CSUB
starter Sammy Rodriguez (Salinas HS)
slammed the door for the next six innings, fanning 10 batters to keep CSUB in
the game, but North Texas starter Brittany Simmons blanked CSUB over the final
eight frames. Finally, in the 11th, two 'Runner errors and a passed
ball opened the floodgates in a four-run inning that decided the affair.
Oklahoma,
meanwhile, scored six in the second inning and five more in the third to put
its opener away early. CSUB broke up the no-hit and shutout bids in the fifth
inning when freshman shortstop Amy
Ricciardi (Chino Hills/Ayala HS) followed Lee's leadoff walk by ripping her
first collegiate home run to deep left field.
CSUB
continues play at the Kajikawa Classic with two games Friday. The 'Runners will
play Big West Conference foe Cal State Fullerton at 9 a.m. (AST) before facing
Pac-10 titan Cal at 11:30 a.m.
