BERKELEY, Calif.-Cal (5-2) defeated CSU
Bakersfield (2-6) 86-56 in the opening round of the Doubletree by Hilton Marina
Cal Classic Saturday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.
Lauren Carter (R-Jr., Moorpark,
Calif., Moorpark HS) scored a
career high 19 points and led CSUB with seven rebounds. The 6-1 forward also
blocked two shots. Kristine Herman (R-Sr., San Ramon,
Calif., Florida Gulf
Coast) scored 13 points
for the Roadrunners. The Roadrunners dressed only six players due to injuries.
The Bears held the Roadrunners to 31.8% shooting for the
game and outrebounded CSUB 60-24. Cal
shot 50% for the game (35-of-70), 58.1% (18-of-31) in the first half. CSU
Bakersfield was able to force 18 turnovers which were turned into 14 points.
“I thought we competed really hard for the entire game,”
said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. “We had our opportunities to score, but we
weren't able to make enough shots to take advantage. We won the battle of
turnovers again. Despite all of our injuries, we have enough tools to be
successful and we will continue to battle.”
The Roadrunners will play Prairie View
A&M Sunday at 12 p.m. to conclude tournament play.
