FULLERTON, Calif.-Head coach Rod Barnes liked Andre Jackson's
practice effort so much on Friday, he awarded the 6-10 junior center with more
playing time on Saturday, a move that led to a career-high 15 points and six
rebounds in 19 minutes of play as Jackson helped pace the Roadrunners to a
73-66 win over Cal State Fullerton Saturday night at Titan Gym.
The win improves to Roadrunners to 3-1 under Barnes, the
best start for the team since the Division I transition, it's their third
straight win, their second straight on the road and their first at Titan Gym
since the Division I series started with the Titans in 2006.
"I'm just really thankful to be 3-1 at this point with this
team," said Barnes. "This team is starting to show what they are capable of, we'll
go home watch the film work on our mistakes because we certainly aren't where
we want to be but I am happy with this team's progress."
The Roadrunners trailed 4-0 in the first minute but came
back to take the lead in the second half by as many as seven on two occasions
and led 41-36 at half. CSUB went on a 4-0 run to start the second half to lead
by 9 in the second half. Fullerton however managed a second half comeback,
keeping it close with the 'Runners
and taking their lone second-half lead with 5:04 remaining on a Kwame
Vaughn layup. The Roadrunners however kept that short-lived as Tyrone White
(Jr., Portland, Ore., North Idaho CC) hit a wide-open layup on the next possession
to give CSUB the lead for good.
The loss was just the third in the last 36 non-conference
games for Fullerton at Titan Gym. CSUB forced 21 Titan turnovers and won the battle on the glass with the
Titans pulling down 15 offensive rebounds en route to 19 second-chance points.
Omondi Amoke led Fullerton with 20 points while Isiah Umipig
added 19 for the Titans who's leading scorer D.J. Seeley was shut down by the
defense of Stephon Carter,(Jr. Bakersfield, Calif. Garces HS) Seeley who entered the game averaging 19.8 points a
game, managed just four points on 0-8 shooting from the field.
"I'm really proud of the effort from Stephon Carter tonight,"
said Barnes. "He showed how important of a player he is to this team by taking
the toughest assignment and guarding Fullerton's best player extremely well."
Carter had 10 points and 9 rebounds while Issiah Grayson (Jr. Atlanta, Ga., Southern Idaho CC) added 12 points on 6019 shooting
and Mo Hughley (Jr., Queen's Village N.Y., Paris CC), added 10 points and six
rebounds including key offensive rebounds late for the Roadrunners.
The Roadrunners improved to 2-0 against opponents from the
Big West Conference and will look to improve to 3-0 against that conference on
Wednesday when they play at Cal State Northridge at 7 P.M.
