STILLWATER, Okla.- Former CSUB wrestler and two-time NCAA
National Champion Stephen Neal will be inducted as a member of the 2012
National Wrestling Hall of Fame induction class on June 1-2 in Stillwater,
Okla. as announced by the Hall of Fame and Museum on Monday.
The San Diego, Calif. native who also won the world
championship in 1999, will be joined by former freestyle wrestling champion
Fred Fozzard, Oregon State and USA wrestling alum Greg Strobel and former Iowa
State national champion and Olympic bronze medalist Chris Taylor as the
induction class for 2012.
Neal becomes the first wrestler in the history of CSUB to be
inducted into the hall of fame. He comprised an overall record of 156-10 while
wrestling for the Roadrunners from 1996-1999 including two national
championships at the heavyweight division in 1998 and 1999 going undefeated in
both seasons and defeating former UFC champion Brock Lesnar in the 1998
national title match.
While at CSUB, Neal was a four-time All-American selection,
four-time Pac 10 champion going a remarkable 34-0 in his four seasons in the
conference. Neal also ended his collegiate career on an 83-match winning streak
and continued on to win the 1999 Pan-Am Games, the 1999 World Championship and
the 1999 US Freestyle Wrestling title.
Upon ended his career on the mat, Neal continued to excel
athletically, and despite not playing college football, played for the New
England Patriots where he was a regular starter and was a member of three Super
Bowl winning teams before retiring due to injury following the 2010 season.
Neal continues to be a staunch supporter of CSUB wrestling
helping out as a volunteer coach, fundraiser and contributor during summer
camps for the program.
