Pipes Wins Four Events To Lead CSUB Past Pacific

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Chris Pipes (Sr., Fresno, Calif., Merced College) won four events to lead CSU Bakersfield past Pacific 153-135 in a MPSF men's swimming and diving dual Saturday afternoon.

Pipes anchored the Roadrunners' 200 medley relay (1:34.23) that opened the meet with a victory for CSUB. Pipes was joined on the relay by Peter Bardessono (Sr., Elverta, Calif., American River College), Brian Martinez (So., Las Vegas, Nev., Arbor View HS), and Dan Wickensheimer (Jr., Fort Wayne, Ind., Bakersfield Stockdale HS). The 6-5 history major took home first place honors in the 50 freestyle in a time of :21.28 and again won in the 100 freestyle (:46.34). Pipes ended the day by anchoring the CSUB 400 freestyle relay that won the race with a time of 3:06.42.

Freshman Troy Neklason (Seattle, Wash., Aviation HS) earned top honors in both the 1m diving and 3m diving events. Neklason defeated teammate Colby Thompson (Fr., Paso Robles, Calif., Paso Robles HS) in the 1m 257.40-216.95. Neklason again edged Thompson in the 3m by a score of 274.45 to 201.40.

Alex Daneke (Jr., Lodi, Calif., Lodi HS) won the 200 freestyle by recording a mark of 1:42.68. Mitch Huxhold (Fr., Escondido, Calif., San Pasqual HS) was the winner in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:38.35. Wickensheimer was victorius in the 100 butterfly (:52.19).

“Chris (Pipes) and Mitch (Huxhold), and Mitch (Wurm) are leading us both in and out of the pool right now,” said CSUB director of swimming Chris Hansen. “We have reached a level that we need will need our 2/3/4 swimmers to step up and be able to support the efforts from guys like Chris, Mitch, and Mitch are providing right now. We are happy that we got the win today.”

The Roadrunners return to the pool for a pair of events next weekend. The divers are at the USC Invitational next Friday and Saturday in Los Angeles. The swimmers will travel to Pacific next Saturday for a quad with Air Force, Pacific, and Seattle University beginning at 12 p.m.
