BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Fresno
State (7-3-3) defeated
CSU Bakersfield (2-8-1) 3-1 to take home the fourth annual Valley Cup at CSUB's
Main Soccer Field.
The Bulldogs' Callie Hancock recorded a pair of goals in the
first half. Hancock got Fresno
State on the board in the
35th minute when she converted a long pass from Morgan Castain. Hancock scored
again with 1:03 remaining in the opening frame for a 2-0 first half Bulldogs'
advantage.
Jessica Fogeltanz (Sr., Camarillo,
Calif., Ventura
College) converted a penalty kick 3:57
into the second half to cut the Fresno
State lead in half.
Hancock completed the hat trick when she scored in the 68th minute.
“Letting in goals in the last 10 minutes of a half have been
our Achilles heel this season,” said CSUB head coach Melissa Phillips. “It
killed us this game. We fought back to get in it, but we couldn't contain
(Callie Hancock).”
Each team has now won twice in the Valley Cup series which
was started in 2008.
The Roadrunners travel to Iowa next weekend for two matches. CSUB is
at Northern Iowa Friday night beginning at 7
p.m. (CDT). The swing through the Hawkeye
State ends at Drake next
Sunday at 1 p.m. (CDT).
