BAKERSFIELD,
Calif.—No. 22 CSU Bakersfield
(9-1-4, 5-1 MPSF) rallied from a goal down to defeat UNLV (2-11, 1-5 MPSF) 2-1
in league men's soccer action Friday night at CSUB's Main Soccer Field.
The Rebels took the lead in the 39th minute when Robert
Garcia connected on a Rory Emslie crossing pass. Gyasi Zardes (R-So., Hawthorne, Calif.,
Leutzinger HS) tied the match in the 53rd minute as Ernesto Hinjosa (Jr., Tustin, Calif.,
Tustin HS) earned the assist. Zardes scored the gamewinner, his 16th goal of
the season at 74:34. Jesus Sanchez (Jr., Chula
Vista, Calif., Castle
Park HS) made a quick pass to Hinojosa who got off an immediate touch pass to
Zardes. Zardes dribbled around UNLV goalie Ryan Harding and put it away into
the empty net.
“I thought in the first half we didn't play very well,” said
CSUB head coach Simon Tobin. “We were a goal down, but in the second half we
came out and played very well in the first 20 minutes. When we got the tying
goal, I felt confident we could score. I know this team can score goals. The
game should have been put away earlier, but we got the win.”
The Roadrunners host No. 5 New Mexico (12-0-2, 6-0 MPSF)
Sunday in the home finale. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
