BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — After a strong start, the CSUB men's basketball team went silent on both ends of the floor and Cal Poly climbed out of an early hole to earn a 77–61 victory Saturday night in Rabobank Arena.

CSUB (9–12 overall) got 16 points apiece from guards Alex Johnson (Toronto/Vaughan Road Academy) and Donavan Bragg (Inglewood/Serran HS), but little else went right for the Roadrunners this night.

Junior forward David Hanson made 6–of–9 from beyond the arc as part of his career–high 29 points to lead Cal Poly (9–11). Senior swingman Shawn Lewis went 6–of–9 from the floor, doing most of his damage inside, as part of his 20–point night.

CSUB looked good early, leading for most of the first half and opening its biggest lead at 25–17 on a conventional three–point play by Johnson. But the offense went stagnant from that point, and Cal Poly sandwiched a 17–4 run in the seven minutes surrounding halftime to take a 34–29 lead.

Cal Poly's surge came in part due to an offense that shot 60.5 percent for the game—14 points better than its previous season best—and in part due to a defense that held the 'Runners to just 36.8 percent from the field.

Although the game remained in the two to three possession range until the final two minutes, when Cal Poly made eight free throws to ice it, after the opening minute of the second half, CSUB never again held the ball with a chance to take the lead.

CSUB hits the road for its next two games, beginning with a trip to Southern Utah on Feb. 2. The 'Runners play at Fresno State on Feb. 7 before returning to Rabobank Arena to host the Bulldogs on Feb. 16.
