TEMPE, Ariz.-CSUB (3-3, 1-1 Pac-10) defeated Arizona
State (5-8, 1-1 Pac-10) 27-17 Jan. 21 in a Pac-10 Wrestling dual at the Wells
Fargo Arena.
"We wrestled well tonight," said CSUB Head Coach Mike Mendoza. "We have some technical things to improve on this week as we get ready for Cal Poly."
The dual opened at 125 pounds where Anthony Robles, the
No. 2-ranked wrestler in the nation defeated Tyler Iwamura (R-So., San Diego,
Calif., Santa Fe Christian HS) by technical fall (19-3) at 6:52.
Frank Lomas (R-Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) moved
up a weight to make his first appearance of the season at 133 pounds to take on
Katlin Goodsite. With the Goodsite
leading 3-2, late in the third period, Lomas used a takedown and a three-point
near fall to take a 7-3 lead. A Goodsite
escape combined with Lomas' riding time advantage gave Lomas a 8-4 victory.
Elijah Nacita (R-Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield
HS) put CSUB into the team lead by pinning Carlos Castro at the 3:56 mark of
their 141-pound contest.
At 149, John Cardenas (R-Jr., Brawley, Calif., Brawley
Union HS) posted a 10-3 victory over Taihei Fukumoto. Andrew
Balch (R-So.,) won by forfeit at 157 to give the Roadrunners a 18-5 lead in the
team scoring right before the 10-minute intermission.
Tejovan Edwards pinned Trevor Hall (Sr., Battle Ground,
Wash., Battle Ground HS) 1:43 into the 165-pound match to make it 18-11. Joey
Granata (R-Sr., Oceanside, Calif., Fallbrook HS) was awarded a forfeit victory
at 174 pounds to increase the Roadrunners' advantage to 24-11.
Jake Meredith defeated Troy Goodban (R-Sr., Bellflower,
Calif., Bellflower HS) by a score of 9-4 at 184 pounds.
With the Roadrunners leading 24-14, Riley Orozco (R-Sr.,
Fallon, Nev., Churchill County HS) clinched the dual victory with a 10-3
decision over Luke Macchiaroli.
The heavyweight match featured a battle of former
teammates as David Morgan (R-Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Centennial HS) took on Levi
Cooper. Cooper defeated Morgan 3-1 to make it the final 27-17.
CSUB returns to the mats next Friday night when the
Roadrunners travel to Cal Poly for a 6:30 p.m. Pac-10 dual.
