BAKERSFIELD,
Calif. - Twelve seconds is
all that separated CSUB cross country Head Coach Robert Boyles from a new blue
and gold hair coloring. Boyles promised his team they could dye his hair CSUB
colors if his top five runners all finished Saturday's meet home meet versus
Pepperdine in less than 19 minutes.
The top four
Roadrunners all met the goal. The fifth, junior Judith Mata, just missed her personal record on the course by seven
seconds, however, and that was enough to save Boyles hair for at least another
week.
"I was actually
looking forward to it," says Boyles. "I thought it was something we could
accomplish and, although we ran really well, we just missed it."
The 'Runners
dominated the top of the lineup, with both Arianna
Celis and Casey Glassey running
PRs and finishing in under 18 minutes. Celis took first place for the third
time this season, beating her time in last week's win over Fresno State on the
same 5K course by 12 seconds in a 17:44.40 finish. Glassey, meanwhile, took
second for the second consecutive week, shattering her previous best by more
than 30 seconds, running 17:54.50 Saturday.
"Arianna just
continues to be a beast for us," says Boyles. "And Casey ran a great race as
well, staying right with Arianna."
Cecilia Lopez cut 34 seconds off her PR
on the course to place third in 18:47.40 while freshman Monica Guzman placed fourth in 18:56.30. Racing unattached, former
Roadrunner Lina Nuñez rounded out the top five with a time of 19:02.00
Mata, Megan Thompson (19:27.20), Melissa Cruz (19:33.00) and Ashley Nolasco (19:36.30) gave CSUB
eight of the top nine places Saturday. Junior Elizabeth Coe was the first Pepperdine
finisher in 19:42.50. Wave runners took places 10 through 14.
The Roadrunners
won the team scoring, 15-50.
CSUB
will take two weeks off before returning to action at the UCSUD Triton Classic
on Oct. 9.
