LAS VEGAS, Nev. – CSU Bakersfield was never able to reach the level of soccer that started its season at a perfect 4-0-0 on Friday and suffered a tough 4-0 defeat at the hands of No. 18 UC Irvine on the first day of the UNLV Rebel Classic.
The Roadrunners (4-2-0) felt the Anteater pressure immediately and CSUB was outshot 10-1 in the first half. UCI finally broke through with two goals in less than three minutes late in the first half before cruising to the big win. It is the most lopsided loss since Sept. 18 of last season when the Roadrunners dropped another 4-0 decision at UNC-Charlotte.
CSUB head coach Simon Tobin made no excuses for his team's performance.
“They are a good team, no doubt about it,” Tobin said. “But we didn't play with any intensity. We were never really in the game. They owned every aspect of the game.”
The Roadrunners did seem to wake up a bit in the second half and were actually level with UCI in shots at six apiece. But as CSUB pushed bodies forward looking to somehow claw back into the match, it was left exposed in defense. A team as good as UCI was able to take advantage. A goal in each of the 64th and 72nd minutes allowed the scoreline to jump to 4-0.
“We had to go for it,” Tobin said, “but left ourselves open.”
CSUB hopes for a better result when it completes the UNLV Rebel Classic on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. when it faces Mt. St. Mary's.
