SAN DIEGO, Calif. – A gritty performance by CSU Bakersfield's defense left previously nationally-ranked University of San Diego without a goal while earning the Roadrunners a 0-0 draw at Torero Stadium on Friday night. The draw lifted CSUB's record to 1-0-2 over its last three matches and 2-1-2 in its last five matches
The Toreros, who opened the season with a win over USC, held a strong shot advantage over the Roadrunners at 23-1, but a solid defensive performance gave San Diego very few realistic scoring opportunities. Only three of USD's 23 shots were on goal, and Roadrunner goalkeeper Kym Gause made all three saves for the clean sheet.
USD was ranked No. 17 in the nation before dropping out of the national rankings before this week after suffering a 1-0 loss at UC Irvine.
“I just told the team however many shots it takes doesn't matter,” CSUB head coach Nicole Van Dyke said. “It's still a draw. Organization across the back line was key. I think our back line was brilliant. They just made it so hard for San Diego to break us down. I was just speechless after the match.”
Incredibly, the first shot of the match was by the Roadrunners' Sam Pena, who had a great shot to score on a counterattack. The offensive movement shifted to San Diego for the rest of the match, but CSUB's defense was up to the task.
“USD has great players; they're a great team,” Van Dyke said. “But when we got back from our loss at San Jose State, that's when we turned the corner. That's when we started playing hard and with more focus. I couldn't be more proud of this team right now.”
CSUB looks to keep its recent hot streak alive next weekend at the Seattle University Tournament when it faces off against Sacramento State on Friday and the University of Idaho on Sunday.
