Roadrunners Fall to LMU in Competitive Battle

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
The CSUB women's soccer team put up a tough fight Sunday evening against the Loyola Marymount Lions on the Main Soccer Field but dropped a 3–1 decision to move to 0–2–1 on the year. LMU moves to 2–1–0 on the year with the victory.

Down 2–0 in the first half, sophomore Sam Peña (Bakersfield HS) netted her first goal of the year in the 25th minute off a pass from junior Kassi Massey (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale HS) but CSUB could not find another strike. Massey sent a free kick into the box which Peña deflected past the goalkeeper on a volley for the goal.

Jordan Nelson scored for LMU in the 17th minute as she took a pass off a free kick from Rachel Fell and blasted a ball from 25 yards out into the back of the net. In the 24th minute, Nickey Ha deflected a failed clear by CSUB in the box and beat 'Runner keeper Kym Gause (Manteca, Calif./Modesto JC) to make it 2–0.

After Peña's goal, LMU added an insurance marker in the 70th minute as Tawni Martino collected a rebound off a shot from Kelsey Wilson for her third goal in as many games to start the year for the Lions.

The Roadrunners remained close throughout the contest, being outshot by a slim margin of just 12–11. CSUB watched a number of opportunities sail just wide or find a cross bar. Peña had another opportunity early in the second as she broke away form the backline defense but was canceled out by the goalkeeper.

“I was proud of our group tonight,” explains Head Coach Nicole Van Dyke. “Our midfield did a tremendous job of disrupting their possession. We gave up two soft goals in the first half and they scored their third as we were pushing forward looking for an equalizer. Kassi, (senior Alexandria ) Ngo and (junior Jessica) Fogeltanz worked an entire 90 minutes tonight. We have shown we are not a pushover team and we have made it very difficult for top teams to beat us.”

CSUB returns to the Main Soccer Field on Friday, Sept. 3, at 5 p.m. against the University of Tennessee–Martin.
