Track and Field Sets 25 Season-Best Marks

AZUSA, Calif. - The CSUB track and field teams set 25 season best marks Friday at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University. Juniors Michael Davis and Derek Kasselstrand also competed at the Mt. Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif. Friday.

The men's team set 15 new marks Friday, highlighted by junior Ryan Nichols in the two sprint races. Nichols took second in his heat of the 100 meters in 11.02, and followed it up with a sixth-heat win in the 200 meters in 22.57. The Roadrunner 800 meter saw five best times led by senior Edward Lee who took second in his heat (1:56.59). Senior Ryan Lucker (1:59.74), senior Jose Orozco (1:59.43), junior Jose Lopez (2:01.45) and freshman Jamie Bravo all lowered their 800 times.

Lee had a big breakthrough in the 1,500 meters, breaking the four-minute barrier (3:59.48) as he took second in his heat. Making his first appearance in a Roadrunner uniform, former Bakersfield Californian Track and Field Athlete of the Year Dayshan Ragans won his flight of the shot put (46-11.5) and took fourth overall in the discus (157-6). Kasselstrand hit a personal-best of 175-0 in the hammer throw to place sixth and senior Alex Haver tied for sixth in the high jump, clearing 6-4.75.

Junior Arianna Celis continued her strong season for the women's team. She won her heat of the 800 (2:15.78) and took fourth place overall in the 1,500 (4:38.77), both season-best marks. Freshman Cecilia Lopez also won her heat of the 800, running a season-low 2:22.28. Freshman Brushay Wandick took third in her heat of the 100 meters (12.70) and sophomore Princess Watts won her heat of the 200 in 25.91.

CSUB returns to action next weekend as the teams head to Cal State L.A. for the Tommy Lister Invitational.
