BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Loyola Marymount spoiled CSUB's debutante
performance in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, scoring five
seventh-inning runs to sweep a doubleheader from the Roadrunners, 2-1 and 6-5,
Saturday afternoon at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
Donning
pink jerseys as part of their Think Pink cancer awareness and prevention
activities, CSUB acquitted itself well through the first six innings of each
game before LMU pulled out both victories with seventh-inning heroics. In game
one, J.J. Hartung's RBI double opened the scoring in front of Amy Charpentier's
game-winning single. In game two, Christine Foley's RBI double preceded Priscilla
Satete's two-run homer that denied CSUB starting pitcher Ryane Petersen (Fresno/Fresno State) her first win in a Roadrunner
uniform.
Sophomore
Sammy Rodriguez (Salinas HS)
actually out-dueled LMU starter Melissa Dykema in the opener. Dykema barely
made it through two innings, needing 54 pitches to record the first six outs.
But despite hitting her hard all game, the 'Runner hitters couldn't break
through until the seventh-and even then bad luck hounded CSUB.
Rodriguez
led off the seventh with a walk before Jill McClelland (Paso Robles/Templeton HS) ripped a shot down the rightfield
line. What would have been a stand up, RBI triple, however, became a ground
rule double when it curled past the foul pole and past the fence out of play by
inches. Kelli Bailey (Rodeo/John Swett
HS) lifted a sac fly to right center that should have scored McClelland
with the tying run, but instead brought home pinch runner Chelsey Bell (Ridgecrest/Burroughs HS) with the first run. With
first base open, LMU intentionally walked Petersen, who leads the PCSC in RBIs,
and Dykema got Kristen Archuleta
(Hollister/San Benito HS) to pop out to end the game.
CSUB
appeared to take control midway through game two, using two-run singles by Heather Veitch (Simi Valley/Royal HS)
and Danielle Lyman (Moreno Valley/Canyon
Springs HS) in the third inning to race to a 4-0 lead. A Sam Fischer solo
shot in the fourth got the Lion offense going. Charpentier and Fischer then
went yard back-to-back in the fifth to make it a one-run game.
Shawna Truan (McArthur/Fall River HS)
came in and got Petersen out of the jam in the fifth and the offense gave her some
breathing room in when Petersen and Archuleta hit consecutive doubles for a 5-3
'Runner lead.
After
LMU took the lead, CSUB had a golden chance to tie in the bottom of the seventh
when a lead off walk and a sacrifice put Stefanie Frei (Valencia/Canyon Country HS) on second with one out. After Veitch
grounded out, discretion proved the better part of valor again for the Lions,
who intentionally walked Petersen for the second time to get to Archuleta.
This
time, Archuleta hit what looked like a game-tying single up the middle. But
Charpentier made a great diving backhanded stop and flipped to second just in
time for the out that sealed the game.
Petersen
and Lyman each collected three hits to lead the CSUB offense Saturday.
Fischer's two home runs were her seventh and eighth of the season, moving her
past Petersen for the conference lead. Charpentier also had three hits for the
Lions.
CSUB
and LMU will conclude their four-game, conference-opening series with a
doubleheader Sunday in Bakersfield.
