BAKERSFIELD,
Calif. - The biggest crowd in CSUB softball history welcomed the most
successful program in NCAA Division I softball history to the Roadrunner
Softball Complex Sunday afternoon, but fifth-ranked UCLA spoiled the party by
sweeping a doubleheader, 8-0 and 7-0.
The
crowd of 955 saw several Roadrunner individual highlights, including senior
third baseman Kelli Bailey (Rodeo/John Swett HS) extending her hitting streak to a career best 13 games with hits in
both ends of the doubleheader. Senior pitcher Shawna Truan
(McArthur/Fall River HS) also got 'Runners
fans buzzing by tossing 4 1/3 innings of no-hit ball to start the second game.
But
UCLA had a little too much of everything Sunday afternoon. The Bruins (19-4
overall) got tremendous pitching performances from Donna Kerr and Aleah Macon,
who combined to allow just six hits while becoming the first pitchers to shut
out CSUB in a doubleheader since Lizzy Prescott and Tracy Motzny did it for
Humboldt State on Apr. 13, 2007.
On
offense, powered its way to 15 runs with the help of eight extra base hits.
Home runs by Monica Harrison in the first game and Andrea Harrison and Julie
Burney in the nightcap did much of the damage.
CSUB
managed four hits in 22 at bats against Kerr in the opener, with senior
shortstop Heather Veitch (Simi Valley/Royal HS) going 2-for-3. Those were actually solid numbers against Kerr, who
entered the day allowing opponents just a .119 batting average.
CSUB
(10-13) hits the road to begin an 11-game road trip Monday afternoon when it
visits UC Riverside for a nonconference doubleheader. The 'Runners do not
return home until they host their Pacific Coast Softball Conference openers
against Loyola Marymount on Apr. 10-11.
