SAN
LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The CSUB softball team had one big comeback in its
satchel Sunday afternoon, but it just missed completing the second comeback it
needed in a 5-4 loss at Big West Conference favorite Cal Poly.
Trailing
4-0, the Roadrunners (9-10 overall) scored four times in the top of the sixth
inning to tie the game. But Cal Poly (8-8) answered with a run in its half of
the sixth before working out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh to
hold on for the win.
CSUB
starting pitcher Sammy Rodriguez saw her personal four-game winning streak snapped
as she gave up a season-high five earned runs. Nevertheless, the 'Runners
nearly pulled the game out when they parlayed three hits and three Mustang
errors into four runs in sixth. But they stranded a base runner on second in
the sixth then couldn't cash in after loading the bases for the heart of the
order with one out in the seventh.
The
'Runners saw their streak of 12 consecutive games with at least one extra base
hit end Sunday as all five CSUB hits were singles. Freshman outfielder Karlee Rodgers (Clovis West HS) broke up Mustang starter Anna Cahn's early no-hit bid with a
fourth-inning single. Senior third baseman Kelli Bailey (Rodeo/John Swett
HS)
extended her hitting streak to nine games with a single to right in the sixth.
CSUB
returns home to host a pair of doubleheaders next weekend. The 'Runners host
former NCAA Division II national rival Cal State Northridge Saturday (Mar. 20)
before welcoming 11-time NCAA Division I champion UCLA Sunday (Mar. 21).
