HOUSTON — For the second consecutive night, a CSUB women's swimming and diving relay team broke the all-time program record, while a pair of individual marks also went down Friday at the Conference USA Championships, hosted by University of Houston.
The night began with a record-setting performance by Rachel McCall, Brooke Penney, Bonny Bordwell and Louise Westergren in the 200 free relay. The quartet placed fifth in 1:34.44, breaking the CSUB record of 1:34.53, set in 2005.
Later in the evening, McCall lowered her own CSUB record in the 100 breast with a 1:03.17, second place finish in the championship finals. Earlier this season, she had achieved a them school-record time of 1:05.34.
Stephanie Donnelly got in to the record-breaking mix as well, placing seventh in the 100 back in a CSUB record 56.90. The previous record of 57.05 (held by Karlyn Pipes-Nelson) had stood for 12 years.
Donnelly and Westergren also entered the top-five in the 100 fly. Donnelly placed seventh overall in 56.71, the fourth fastest time in CSUB history, while Westergren placed 10th in 57.31, putting her in a tie for the fifth fastest time in program history.
“I couldn't have asked for more tonight,” said head Coach Pat Skehan. “These are tough records we are breaking and we are scoring all over the place in the finals. I am really happy with the way we are swimming across the board.”
The Roadrunners also got a seventh place finish from Victoria Kreutz in the one-meter springboard diving event. her preliminary score of 275.70 was a season-best for the senior, who went on to score 255.90 in the finals.
The final session of the 2010 C-USA Championships is Saturday night and includes the 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay.
