SAN
JOSE, Calif. - The CSUB softball team pounded out 17 runs and 29 hits, but it
was good for only a doubleheader split at San Jose State Saturday afternoon.
CSUB collected 16 hits, its third-most ever at the NCAA Division I level, in
rolling to a 9-1 win in the opener. The teams traded comebacks in the nightcap,
with San Jose eventually prevailing 11-8 in nine innings.
CSUB
(2-7 overall) got another solid pitching performance from sophomore Sammy Rodriguez (Salinas HS), who continues to settle in nicely to her new role in the
circle. She allowed one first inning run in game one before shutting out San
Jose on two hits the rest of the way. She received ample support from her
offense, whose 16-hit effort was the most by a Roadrunner team since a 20-hit
afternoon against San Diego on Mar. 29, 2008.
Two
bad innings sabotaged another strong offensive outing in the nightcap as the
Spartans scored seven runs in the fourth inning to erase an early 4-0 CSUB
lead. After the 'Runners clawed their way back to take an 8-7 lead in the eight
inning, San Jose tied it in the bottom of the eighth before getting a two-out,
walk-off homerun from Natasha Hawkins to win it in the ninth.
CSUB
got strong offensive performances from several players Saturday. Freshman
outfielder Karlee Rodgers (Clovis West HS) and junior first baseman Ryane Petersen
(Fresno/Fresno State)
each had three hits in game one. Senior first baseman Danielle Lyman (Moreno
Valley/Canyon Springs HS) had three hits in game two.
Shortstop
Heather Veitch (Simi Valley/Royal HS) continued the strong start to her senior season.
She went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and her first collegiate triple in the
opener. She came on as a late defensive replacement in the nightcap and added a
double, a sacrifice and a run.
Hawkins'
three-run homer to win game two highlighted San Jose's efforts Saturday.
Leftfielder Alyssa Sulay went 3-for-7 and was the only Spartan to finish the
afternoon with more than two hits.
CSUB
returns to Bakersfield for hit 2010 home opening series Friday and Saturday,
Feb. 26-27, when Utah Valley University visits for a four-game set. Although
both teams are members of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, these will be
nonconference games.
