BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The CSUB men's basketball team rode a sizzling start into a convincing win Tuesday night, rolling past Idaho State 75–56 in Rabobank Arena.
CSUB moved to 5–4 with the win, its best nine–game record in five seasons of NCAA Division I play. ISU fell to 2–5 with the loss.
Junior guard Alex Johnson (Toronto/Vaughan Road Academy) tied a career high with seven three pointers as part of his game–high 23–point night. Led by Johnson's efforts, CSUB set Division I school records with 11 three pointers and a 57.9 percent (11–of–19) mark from beyond the arc.
Defensively, CSUB held its first opponent of the season under 60 points, running its winning streak under such circumstances to 10 games.
The Roadrunners also got 17 points and five assists from senior guard Donavan Bragg (Inglewood/Serra HS) and a 13–point, five–assist, four–steal night from sophomore guard Stephon Carter (Garces HS).
Broderick Gilchrest scored 13 of his team–high 19 points in the second half for the Bengals.
CSUB never trailed Tuesday night but it took the better part of 10 minutes for the 'Runners to truly find their grove. Leading 17–15 nine and a half minutes in, a Johnson three ignited the CSUB inferno. His long ball launched a 16–2 run that put the 'Runners in control at 33–17. The lead was 19 at the half, 42–23, and it never dipped below that for the balance of the game.
The 'Runners extended their advantage to 62–28 midway through the second half, matching the second–biggest lead they've built in the 103 games they've played in their Division I era. CSUB led by as many as 36 in a 98–64 win over Loyola Marymount on Jan. 7, 2008.
With the comfortable lead, Head Coach Keith Brown was able to play his entire bench for the first time this season as freshman Lance Bailey (Los Angeles/Fairfax HS) made his collegiate debut, posting an assist and a steal.
CSUB will hit the road for a big test at Utah State Saturday in Logan. The 'Runners will return home to open a four–game homestand Dec. 15 against Portland State.
