MALIBU — There's no place like road for the CSUB men's basketball team. The Roadrunners lived up to their name, winning their second consecutive game away from home — once again in dramatic fashion — with a 66–64 win at Pepperdine Saturday night in Firestone Fieldhouse.
Just as it happened in their previous road win at Sacramento State six days ago, the 'Runners needed a big block on the final opponent possession to seal the victory. This time, sophomore guard Stephon Carter (Garces HS) did the honors, coming from the weakside to swat Lorne Jackson's layup attempt with .7 seconds remaining.
Junior guard Alex Johnson (Toronto/Vaughan Road Academy) led four 'Runners in double figures with 18 points. Carter added 10 with a game–high five assists while junior forward Rashad Savage (Philadelphia/Odessa JC) reached double figures on the boards for the third consecutive game, finishing with a game–high 12 rebounds.
The first half went back and fourth, with the teams playing through four ties and 13 lead changes. Carter made a pair of free throws with 3:51 remaining in the half to give CSUB a 28–27 lead it wouldn't relinquish over the final 23:51.
CSUB led 36–33 at the half and expanded its lead to as many as 11 points at 53–42 six minutes into the second half. The Waves couldn't make a serious run but, nevertheless, slowly chipped away at the lead until they finally made it a one possession game, 64–61, on a Keion Bell three–point play with 41 seconds remaining.
A pair of Johnson free throws pushed CSUB's edge back to five points before a Bell three–pointer gave Pepperdine life with 9.2 seconds to play at 66–64. Carter missed the front end of a one–and–one opportunity with 8.6 on the clock before hustling back to make the game–saving defensive play.
CSUB (2–2 overall) returns home to host San Jose State in the Icardo Center Wednesday night at 7 p.m. San Jose State is coming off a 75–72 win at Oregon.
